A Charity Initiative that provides cookery classes to people living with cancer and their families.
Life Kitchen was founded by Ryan Riley with the aim to help anyone who has survived or is still going through cancer, to learn recipes designed to improve the quality of meals as often dramatic changes to taste buds can happen as a result from the gruelling treatment.
Ryan’s mum passed away from cancer five years ago and so he experienced first-hand how chemotherapy affected her taste and ability to enjoy food. Being able to enjoy food is a vital part of life, hence why Ryan recognised how important it was to adapt the dishes so that those caring for or affected by cancer could taste them.
With this new idea seed planted in his head, Ryan took to Twitter to gage the interest. Food Guru Nigella Lawson supported the idea from the get go and within one week Ryan had raised £10,000 through a GoFundMe page to put together a pilot, which resulted in offers of support from River Cottage and many others.
Ryan’s Life Kitchen classes were so successful it enabled him to open the Life Kitchen Cookery School alongside a cookbook. The cookery school based in Sunderland, offers an outreach space for local people as well as those travelling from all over the UK and abroad to come and fall in love with food again whilst forgetting about the treatment they had either survived or were still undergoing.
